What is a Cornucopia?

What is a Cornucopia

A cornucopia is a hollow horn-shaped basket that is often found filled with seasonal fruits and vegetables. They make beautiful centerpieces, but back in the time of Ancient Greeks, the cornucopia served a more practical purpose and had a rich mythology.

The most well-known cornucopia myths begins with the birth of the famous Greek god Zeus. When the king of the gods was just an infant, he was hidden away from his father Cronus and cared for by the goat Amaltheia. Zeus, with his incredible strength, accidentally broke off one of Amaltheia’s horns, which was said to have the power to provide never-ending sustenance. According to legend, the cornucopia’s distinctive shape was modeled after this horn.

Now that you’ve gathered all the necessary materials, it’s time for the fun part – making the cornucopia!

Step 1: First, you’ll need to wrap the burlap around the cornucopia. Trim away the extra burlap, but make sure to leave plenty of material to tuck inside

Step 2: Use your hot glue gun to adhere the burlap to the cornucopia frame. Make sure it is adequately secure.

Step 3: Take a hank of raffia that’s around ¾ inch thick. Use your hemp cord to tie a knot around one end. Attach the raffia to the table with a binder clip, and wrap the hemp cord around the raffia at 2-inch intervals and tie a knot at the other end. The raffia rope should be about a yard long Repeat this process to create a second raffia rope. Connect both raffia ropes using a small piece of hemp cord to create a rope that is double-length. Create a total of 9 double-length raffia ropes

Step 4: Take a hank of raffia that’s around 2 inches thick. Use your hemp cord to tie a knot around one end. Attach the raffia to the table with the binder clip, and wrap the hemp cord around the raffia at 4-inch intervals to create a looser rope. Make a second thicker raffia rope and connect the two the same way you did in step 3. This will be the mouth of your cornucopia.

Step 5: Tie one of the thinner raffia ropes to the cornucopia base using hemp cord. Wrap the rope around the frame, applying hot glue as you go. When you reach the end of your rope, you hemp twine to connect it to another thin raffia rope, and continue wrapping the cornucopia in this manner until you reach the mouth.

Step 6. Tie the thicker raffia rope to the end of the last used thinner rope. Attach around the mouth of the cornucopia using hot glue.

Step 7. Apply hot glue to any spots where the rope may feel insecure. Stuff with dried wheat, fruits, vegetables, or whatever you want and proudly display! You can even style your cornucopia flower arrangement as the centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table.
